After trying her hand at acting, Rose decides to change career paths and enter law school.
She enrolls in law school in a sleepy New England town, only to find that the practice of law is not all she will study. This quirky thirty-something Italian girl falls in love when she lays eyes on Anil, a handsome intellectual from India. The two discover a deep connection and quickly begin a romantic relationship. What could go wrong as their romance blossoms? Their future looks bright. They have each other. They have great friends. They also have Anil’s mother. Inspired by true events, Mother Knows Worst is a humorous and heartfelt novel. Rose is on a path to finding herself, love, and relationships, taking the reader on a delightful and often comedic journey as she explores two cultural worlds colliding.
Mother Knows Worst Brings Readers Relatable Characters and Scenes. The author brings readers humor, romance, family drama, and a lot of relatable character growth and life challenges in this uniquely presented novel. Readers follow the main character, Rose, as she works through her personal struggles, relationship woes, and life challenges through therapy. Rose gives her therapist (and readers) the details of her past, her relationship with her husband, Anil, and the effects of cultural differences, a problematic mother-in-law, personal insecurities, and outside elements' impacts on her marriage. Even readers not facing a cross-cultural marriage will find the pieces of Rose's story relatable and engaging.
Roma Offers an Easy to Read, Engaging Novel. I didn't immediately fall into sync with the author's writing style--and I didn't immediately enjoy Rose's character. It took several pages to settle into the back-and-forth flow between the character's memories and the therapy session details. Once I did, however, the storytelling technique was straightforward to read and engaging. As the storyline is therapeutic for Rose, it is interestingly therapeutic for the reader too. Through the humor, drama, personal reflections, and character growth, I quickly found myself quite attached to Rose and her story.
Would I Recommend Mother Knows Worst by Sofia Bella Roma? Fans of family dramas, women's fiction, and relatable, more realistic romance novels will enjoy this novel. Maintaining a marriage isn't always easy--especially with added challenges beyond the day-to-day "usual." I had the best mother-in-law ever. My husband, unfortunately, did not. While my mother didn't have a cultural basis for her havoc--she created challenges in many other unnecessary ways. The author highlights the cultural and generational differences that Rose faced in a unique, relatable manner that makes this an entertaining and thought provoke novel for your reading list.
