About the Book

Cracked doesn’t always mean broken.

Grieving her mother’s death, Mari Lennox travels to Kyoto, Japan to take photographs of Yanagi Inn for a client. As she explores the inn and its grounds, her camera captures striking images, uncovering layers of mystery shrouding the old resort—including an overgrown, secret garden on a forbidden island. But then eerie weeping no one else in the inn seems to hear starts keeping her awake at night.

​Despite the warnings of the staff, Mari searches the deep recesses of the old building to discover the source of the ghostly sound, only to realize that her own family’s history is tied to the inn, its mysterious, forlorn garden . . . and the secrets it holds.

 

My Review

The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn combines paranormal mystery with family drama. As the main character Mari returns to Japan and an old inn she knew as a child, she encounters a supernatural mystery that opens doors to the past, allows her to face her grief after the loss of her mother, learn some family secrets and bring some healing and closure to others as well.  

 

Readers will Encounter a Unique Cast of Characters. It took me a while to connect with Mari's character. I almost think that was because she was trying to connect with herself for much of the book! While she was my favorite character by the novel's end, she certainly shared the storyline's stage with the entire cast. Each well-developed character brought their own unique traits, backgrounds, and pieces to help expose secrets, provide healing and create a complete story.

 

Would I recommend The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn by Amber A. Logan? The paranormal elements begin early in this novel and carry forward to nearly the end as secrets of the past unfold. While this is a paranormal mystery, fans of that genre will enjoy how the author presents the unknown. Aside from the supernatural mystery, the novel's primary focus is healing and finding peace and new beginnings. I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to fans of paranormal mysteries and fans of family drama novels that take characters on unique journeys to make peace with family history.
