Should racism prevent you fighting for your country?
Does bigotry still live even after a war has ended?
Must standing at the gates of hell in a POW camp forever change a man?
Memories of his internment as a prisoner echo as a young war veteran returns to his family and an enigmatic visitor arrives unannounced on Christmas morning.
The guest brings memories of the war, the horrors of the camps and the life-altering changes in his own psyche as his family prepares for their annual feast.
Fabyan Place is an engrossing suspenseful historical fiction novel about two mixed race young men from urban New Jersey and rural Georgia whose experiences clash in a Nazi concentration camp.
Fabyan Place Offers More Than a War Story. The author takes readers on a different than usual route as he tells his characters' stories. While he presents the harsh realities of WWII and POW camp survival--he adds the social, emotional, and psychological elements faced by his characters as they cope with not only their active wartime experiences but the return home. This description may sound typical of military fiction, but the author adds one more twist as he explores the mens' journeys through racial tensions and prejudice, which I have not seen addressed in a WWII novel before.
The Author Gives Characters That Capture Readers Hearts. I loved the author's character development and the flow of his storyline. It is impossible to read this novel and not feel drawn to Sonny and John and their stories. The characters form their connection during their time as POWs, and they face so many challenges and struggles both abroad and at home. I found myself ready to follow their stories beyond the last pages of the book.
Would I Recommend Fabyan Place by Pete Angus? I am not always a military/war fiction fan. While this book is undoubtedly well researched and historically placed in WWII--it also looks at the realities of human life beyond the warzone. Especially in terms of racism and the lasting effects of war on a soldier. I would certainly recommend this book to fans of WWII fiction and those who enjoy powerful, historical fiction that can cross time with continued relevance to society and life. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
