I began writing at age nine with a story about a doctor’s cat, and then a short sci-fi story at age twenty-three. Thirteen years later, my foray into serious-minded writing simply happened. I started writing again after returning from a trip to Prague for an international forensic psychiatry conference. I’m a psychiatrist by trade. What I learned there, combined with my impressions of Prague, my prior ruminations on the nature of love and evil, and my clinical knowledge all combined to create The Diamond Rose, the first book in my Sentinel 10 series. It was a moment when all sorts of aspects of myself, my life experiences and my interests came together, like a self-assembling puzzle.
I’ve always been drawn to strong women characters in books and movies, so I choose female heroines for my paranormal-fantasy novels because of that. Originally, Amanda Griffith, the protagonist, was based entirely on me; I was simply projecting myself into the story. This is no longer true; now she feels more like a sister and a distinct person to me.
My female heroines are accomplished, smart, beautiful young women with a lot of heart and courage. But they’re not martial arts experts, and they don’t engage in physical fights. That’s what the male characters are there for, among other things like romance and heartbreak.
I mean, truly, in real life, how many women can physically fight a man, or a monster? In paranormal fiction, as well as in movies, a lot of women are kicking and punching and taking down big guys. For me, that that wasn’t realistic. I couldn’t do it, and I doubt my girlfriends could do it either. My heroines have special super-psychic powers; they kick ass AND get to keep their stiletto heels!
